The “new” bridge over the Gil\u00e3o River, in the heart of Tavira, arose from the need to create a new connection between the banks due to the deterioration of the “military bridge”. The new reinforced and prestressed concrete structure is made of piers with a modified rectangular section and ribs at the corners with 3.20m x 1.2m and a maximum free height of 64m; the foundations of each pier are done with 15 micropiles 34m to 39m deep. Some of the original structure and foundations of the military bridge were reused, resulting in significant savings.
