Alegria One (Avenida da Liberdade 81)

Rehabilitation

Project Description

Situated on one of the most important avenues in Lisbon, Alegria One is a building with a history that began in the mid-19th century. Initially constructed by Felix Nicolau Caleia, the building later became the property of the Keil family and the Ultramarina Company. In 2007, it was acquired by Eastbanc, marking the start of the adaptation process with architect Eduardo Souto Moura. Exhibiting typical characteristics of late Pombaline architecture, the building rises vertically with seven elevated floors and a basement. The architectural layout aimed at creating spacious office areas, expanding the building vertically, introducing a basement level, and extending the underground area towards the rear – facing Praça da Alegria. Structural challenges involved the complete demolition of the building’s interior, excavation work to incorporate new underground structures, and the use of lightweight and prestressed slabs with expressive spans.
