Bridge over the Soure River, Alfarelos

Rehabilitation

Project Description

Dating back to 1887, the railway bridge over the Soure River on the Alfarelos Branch has a total length of 120.12m (3×40.04m). The deck consists of two continuous riveted lattice girders of the multiple hinge type, with a height of 5.8m and a width of 4.8m. The deck is supported on masonry pillars founded at a maximum depth of 15m by piles. The deck is supported on the pillars by longitudinal movable supports, at the abutments and at one of the pillars. At the other pillar, the supports are of the fixed type. The bridge deck was altered in 1967 with the introduction of catenary and the raising of the upper rail and horizontal bracing.
The intervention included the introdution of external prestressing and replacement of some steel elements. The pillars and abutments were strengthned with micropiles.
