Duarte Pacheco Viaduct

Rehabilitation

Project Description

Duarte Pacheco Viaduct is a reinforced concrete structure, with 355 metres long between the axes of the abutments, designed in 1937 by João Alberto Barbosa Carmona and built in 1944 by “Sociedade de Empreitada de Obras Públicas, Lda” (SEOP, Lda).
In 1993 and 1994, LNEC performed inspections and tests, which revealed cracks associated with alkali-silica expansive reactions in the concrete. The rehabilitation carried out in 2003 involved local repair of areas with signs of reinforcement corrosion, crack sealing, rehabilitation and replacement of bearings, reinforcement with carbon fibre laminates and corrosion protection with a thick, flexible coating. In 2023 and 2024, the seismic reinforcement of the viaduct was executed, involving the reinforcement of the main pilasters and the longitudinal connection between the decks of the central arch structures and viaducts.
